CARPET FLOORING offers unparalleled warmth and comfort.
Carpet gives you a wider variety of styles.
colors, designs, and textures than any other flooring option. In
addition to the warmth and comfort that only carpet can deliver, it is
often the budget-conscious alternative.
Several factors determine carpet quality, starting
with the fiber itself. Carpet is made from natural or synthetic fibers
– nylon, polyester, polypropylene (olefin), and
wool. The fiber is converted to yarn, then tufted to a backing to form
the pile you walk on. Nylon is the most widely used because it offers
the most versatility and durability at the most reasonable price. It can
be dyed into an endless array of colors, and supports many carpet
styles. Polyester also offers excellent fiber strength, and is
particularly resistant to water-soluble stains. Olefin has the highest
resistance to both stains and common household cleaners, though its
color range is more limited. It generates the least static electricity
of all the carpet fibers, and can be engineered for use in outdoor
applications. Wool, a natural fiber, is typically the most expensive of
the available carpet fibers, while appearing and feeling the most
luxurious.
The way the fiber filaments are spun into yarn is
called the twist of the fiber. Twist is locked into the fiber with heat
or steam. The tighter the twist, the better the carpet is at resisting
changes to its texture and appearance.
The other characteristic of carpet that affects
quality is the density, or how close the tufts are to one another. In
general, the denser the carpet, the higher the quality. Look at a piece
of carpet, then bend it back on itself; the less backing you are able to
see, the denser the carpet.
But almost as important as the carpet is the pad
beneath it. The pad adds to the comfort of any carpet, making it feel
more luxurious to walk on, while adding insulating and acoustical
properties. It also helps hide some of the imperfections in your
subfloor. Some pads offer moisture control and even anti-microbial
features.
The type of carpet you choose
– Berber loop-pile or cut-pile, Saxony, cut-loop, textured plush, or
commercial loop – will play a big role in the style and definition of
your room. And carpet can be installed in any area, above, on or below
grade, with the appropriate pad.
Today's quality carpets offer warranties in terms
of durability, soil and stain resistance, and texture retention that
range from ten to twenty years.
Tell us how you use your room, what kind of foot
traffic it has, the importance of stain and soil resistance (the
presence of children and pets plays a role in that aspect), what look
you want to achieve. We'll recommend the carpet best suited to
accomplish those goals. Then once you've selected a carpet, we'll
complete the project with expert installation.
